Deadly Aspects of Translators (part 1)

Great! I’ve been given that assignment that I quoted for a week ago. I’m really excited!

This is a new client (let’s call it “client”, it could be a translation agency or an individual client) who promises more work in the near future. I have the skills to do it since I have studied for this, I have experience in this particular subject and I feel really confident.

Let’s go and do it. But…

I’ve been asked to do it in “track changes mode”. What’s that? Please, any help!! I don’t know how to do it. So I will do it as I ….(I’m very proud to tell the client that I don’t know how to do it so..I will do it.

The deadline is on Tuesday (a week from now). I have a lot of time. Yes, it’s not too long. I will do it on Monday night. Suddenly, I realise that on Monday night I have tickets to go to a soccer match (or to a hairdresser appointment if you prefer) so..I will tell the client that I will send the job on Wednesday. Tuesday/Wednesday is more or less the same. In the end, he will call me later to tell me that he hasn’t done anything with the translation that he requested URGENTLY (and I didn’t charge for this “URGENT” thing).

My job is done and ready to go. The client has requested me an electronic copy with these “track changes mode” and a hard copy. I will send the electronic copy. The hard copy will go by post in a very small envelope. As this envelope is small I will fold the papers in 4.

Oh! I have almost forgotten!! The client has requested an invoice. What’s an invoice? How do I do it? I really don’t know. At this stage, I’d better ask someone else.

Does it all sound familiar? Does it ring the bell?

Yes, in fact, I haven’t made up all this. They are things that happened to me on different occasions.
